Tamil Nadu Boasts 74 Medical Colleges as NEET UG 2025 Admissions Begin

CHENNAI | With NEET UG 2025 counselling set to commence, Tamil Nadu emerges as the top state for MBBS aspirants, housing a total of 74 medical colleges—38 under government management and 36 private—and leading the nation in medical education infrastructure.

NIRF-2024 Ranked Institutions in Tamil Nadu:

  • Christian Medical College, Vellore (Rank 3)
  • Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Coimbatore (Rank 8)
  • Madras Medical College & Government General Hospital, Chennai (Rank 10)
  • Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences, Chennai (Rank 12)
  • SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Chennai (Rank 18)
  • Sri Ramachandra Institute of Higher Education and Research, Chennai (Rank 20)
  • PSG Institute of Medical Sciences and Research, Coimbatore (Rank 41)

Other leading institutions include the newly established AIIMS Madurai (50 MBBS seats) and K.A.P. Viswanatham Government Medical College, Trichy, which admits 150 MBBS students per year.

Domicile Eligibility for State Quota:

  • Tamil Nadu domicile required, verified via Nativity Certificate or education documents (Class 6–12)
  • Schooling outside Tamil Nadu mandates additional proof and an undertaking
  • NRI/PIO candidates may apply under Management Quota if eligibility criteria are met
  • Non-resident students are allocated seats under Open Category

Counselling, managed by the Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER), will cover admissions to MBBS, BDS, AYUSH, and other undergraduate medical courses in the state.
